Under general direction, provides specialized therapist services to the mentally disordered offender population in the criminal justice system, which may include the Conditional Release Program (CONREP) and interacts with and provides competency assessments and reports as required by the courts.

Incumbents in this classification are first-line working supervisors, performing journey level work, and are expected to carry out assignments with considerable independence. Incumbents are assigned program responsibility for consultative or treatment activity including specialized services to the mental disordered offender population in the criminal justice system. This classification works under the direction of higher level management staff and work is performed within a broad framework of general policy, requiring creativity and resourcefulness to accomplish goals and objectives, and in applying concepts, plans and strategies which may deviate from traditional methods and practices. This classification is distinguished from the next higher level of classification of Forensic Mental Health Specialist II in that the Forensic Mental Health Specialist II is a licensed position assigned program duties and responsibilities and is designated the Community Program Director pursuant to the California Penal Code.
